Sight Loss Friendly Church Advisor
Is this you? - We are looking for someone who will work alongside the SLFC Coordinator, Advisor and volunteers to develop excellent engagement with churches, Christian organisations and other communities so that they make appropriate adjustments to enable the full participation of blind and partially sighted people in their communities.
About the role
This is a role with an occupational requirement of being a practising Christian, as part of the Sight Loss Friendly Church team.
Main Purpose
- To work alongside the SLFC Coordinator, SLFC Advisor and SLFC volunteers to develop excellent engagement with churches, Christian organisations and other communities so that they make appropriate adjustments to enable the full participation of blind and partially sighted people in their communities.
- To contribute to all aspects of the Sight Loss Friendly Church Campaign to maximise 1. Awareness of the issues, 2. Encourage Accessibility for blind and partially sighted people and 3. Develop the Ability to reach out to blind and partially sighted people.

Role requirements

Main Duties and responsibilities:
- Prepare and deliver SLFC virtual Training Sessions, Catch Up Sessions and Focus On Sessions.
- Help to deliver other virtual sessions as required within the SLFC team of staff and volunteers.
- Oversee SLFC volunteers performance during virtual and face to face sessions in the absence of the SLFC Coordinator.
- Work with SLFC volunteers, assisting and advising them to ensure agreed content is delivered in a professional manner to churches.
- Oversee the preparation of all Sight Loss Sunday Resources and ensure that they are added to the website within agreed timescales.
- Maintain the SLFC email account and respond to telephone and email requests giving specialist advice to churches within agreed timescales.
- Develop relationships with SLFC churches, through thank you calls, giving specialist advice, virtual sessions and staying in contact through regular updates.
- Monitor and maintain the levels of impact and satisfaction levels from promoting and delivering SLFC services.
- Responsible for the monitoring and maintenance of SLFC resources on the website ensuring that they are up to date, relevant and contribute by adding new resources to meet the ongoing needs of the service.
- Assist in maintaining systems and diaries to manage the ongoing two way correspondence between churches and Torch and the delivery of all virtual sessions.
- Assist in devising and developing a growing variety of ways for recruiting, training and encouraging volunteers to ensure we have sufficient resource at any one time to cover the expected increase in SLFC delivery.
- As required, respond to requests for virtual meetings from churches, agencies and events in respect of Torch ministry either by yourself or arranging a suitable representative.
- As required attend churches, conferences and exhibitions to speak, deliver training or lead a session to promote the work of Torch and SLFC.
- Assist in promoting the work of Torch through carrying our radio interviews as required.
- Alongside the SLFC Coordinator and SLFC Advisor be a point of contact for encouragement and support to our network of Torch Fellowship Groups. Plus offer to engage with TFGs virtually as part of their meetings to promote SLFC.
- Prepare reports and attend face to face and virtual meetings as required.
- Fully engage with the wider life of Torch Trust, contributing to prayer meetings, being involved as appropriate with other Torch services, supporting colleagues etc.
- Promote and support Torch’s work in their church and other contacts in order to raise awareness and support for the ministry.
- Fully engage with Torch’s safeguarding policy.
- Undertake such other duties as the Head of Services or Chief Executive may from time to time determine.
- This job description will be subject to review and amendment, to meet the changing needs of the organisation.
Person Specification:
Ability to confidently deliver virtual and face to face events independently or with others, and be able to engage with people particularly church leadership teams.
It will be essential that you are well organised, able to plan ahead, work independently with minimum supervision and can organise your time effectively.
You will have the experience and expertise to advise churches on the technical aspects of supporting people with sight loss in their church.
Willing and able to travel to speak, deliver training or lead a session at churches, conferences or exhibitions, representing Torch in an engaging and inspiring way.
You will have excellent interpersonal skills and understand how to communicate effectively, demonstrating the ability to work collaboratively with a range of different stakeholders.
You will be confident in I.T. and range of system processes, proactive, creative, and able to use own initiative.
Available to work flexibly, including some non-standard hours.
You will be reliable, always on time with a committed work ethic always looking for what is the next task.
Able to fully support Torch’s values as a committed and practising Christian with an active personal relationship with God.
The ability to work effectively to deadlines, meet agreed tasks and achieve demonstrable results.
You will be a team player who welcomes collaboration with their colleagues, takes on board ideas from others and can accept comments and feedback on their work.
The ability to recruit, train, motivate, support and oversee the work of volunteers.
Contract and Work Pattern
This is a permanent contract of 25 hours per week. The working pattern will be varied and include weekend / evening work as needed, to meet the needs of the service, engaging with churches across the denominational spectrum.
