        International Liaison

This role will seek to make contact with previous and new international partners, establishing communication and relationships and beginning to build a supportive network of Christian ministries serving blind and partially sighted people.

        About the role

        Role Context

Historically, Torch developed connections internationally with several other Christian charities that serve blind and partially sighted people. Two conferences in the UK brought leaders from several of these organisations together. Torch assisted with the development of braille libraries in several countries. In 2018, the member of staff responsible for this work retired and was not replaced and so contact with these different ministries was lost.

In 2022, the Torch Board approved a new Strategy, one element of which is to become more active globally. As part of this, we are keen to rekindle links with previous global partners and begin to make new ones. It is hoped that we can be a catalyst for developing an international network of Christian ministries who serve blind and partially sighted people. Torch is keen both to share the resources we have for others to use in order to benefit more visually impaired people and to be learning from our peers around the world to enhance our own ministry.

        Main Duties and Responsibilities

        • To research ministries that work with blind and partially sighted people anywhere in the world.
        • To make contact with such organisations, building relationships, finding out what they do and making them aware of what Torch has to offer.
        • To explore the possibility of setting up an international virtual network Christian ministries serving blind and partially sighted people in order to share ideas and resources and support each other.
        • To promote the Torch magazine to gain new audiences and gather ideas for how it might develop to involve greater international input.

        Volunteering at Torch

Torch is blessed to have many committed supporters, some of who freely give their time and skills as volunteers to help deliver its ministry. Volunteers are an essential part of Torch’s workforce and enable much more to be done than would be possible using only paid staff. Torch is committed to properly supporting volunteers to enable them to contribute meaningfully to its mission and for this to be a fulfilling experience for them.
Volunteering is most helpful when there is a clear commitment from both sides, so expectations are shared and there is clarity for both the volunteer and the organisation. Torch therefore asks volunteers to commit to a pattern of work and an agreed number of hours per week or month. To successfully fulfil the role of International Liaison Volunteer, we would anticipate a minimum commitment of approximately half a day per week or two days per month will be required.

        Next Steps

Firstly, download and read Joining the Journey. This is intended to give a basic overall picture of what joining Torch will be like.
